I think the casting for Cheery makes sense, but not calling Cheery *herself* non-binary, unless you want to say that *all* Dwarves are non-binary.

Really, they're all supposed to appear male as a reference to the 'no-one ever sees a female dwarf' trope common to the genre. In DW, they do exist, but not only do they naturally appear much the same as male dwarves, they are culturally discouraged from differentiating themselves in any way from the male dwarves. A sort of inverse to human society where men and women are 'supposed' to present completely differently to each other and dressing or behaving more like the opposite...sex, gender, whatever... is (or was depending on the culture) frowned upon.
I don't think it was originally supposed to be any kind of comment about transgender or non-binary people, thought I can see why it has applicability.
