Okay, I'll bite: Let's take a look at Jimmy Olson on Supergirl.

Does he get any of Jimmy's storylines from 50+ years of comics? Do we see him get to be an investigative photojournalist? Dealing with CADMUS and his father's involvement? Being the unflappable weirdness magnet?

No. We get a failed romance plot, a failed attempt to shoehorn him into a darkedgey Batman-Lite hero identity that belongs to someone else in comics, and now he'll be leaving the show because they 'couldn't figure out what to do with the character'.

Now, say you're a preteen black kid who watches Supergirl, you think that Jimmy is cool because representation DOES matter, you don't know the backstory so to you Jimmy is Guardian....only to pick up your first Superman comic to find....a redheaded white guy who has nothing to do with anything the tv version of Jimmy Olson is.

This is a perfect example. Now they can use him as an example of why they don't actually need to include diversity after all because hey, look, they tried but it didn't work. Yeah, it didn't work because they were lazy AF about it and didn't put in any real effort to make him an actual developed character instead of just the token black guy.

And what's particularly infuriating is they've done better. Dream Girl turned into Dreamer, a trans character played by a trans actress. African-American representation: here's Black Lightning, who's barely cameo-ed in cartoons getting his own show.

But no, the Jimmy Olson racebend was poorly thought out and clearly done for Progressive Points.

And hell, look at Miles Morales. He starred in one of the most well-received Spider-Man movies EVER.

And in another ten, fifteen years, noone's going to remember that Jimmy Olson was black in three and a half seasons of the Supergirl tv series, while the comics with the white redhead will still be rolling off the press.
