Yeah I remember learning about when they first put in the code for moviemaking, it was absolutely ridiculous It hasn't gotten much better since then either.
The worst part, imo, is that you see newscasts of actual shootings, planes going down, and ships sinking. Like don't swear, keep it PG, and then they show live footage of people being killed. It's disgusting.

Things are definitely better than under the Hays Code. Nobody could be gay (I guess they could be implied to be gay if they were also the bad guy), you couldn't have sympathetic villains, everyone had to get their comeuppance (see, for example: the ending of Mildred Pierce), etc. Meanwhile, over on TV, remember the brouhaha over an inter-racial kiss on Star Trek in the late 60s? No one would blink an eye at that now. Not being able to say fuck isn't the worst thing in the world.

True, things were much worse with the Hays Code. I probably shouldn't have made light of it. Interracial relationships were actually banned under it, which is why Star Trek was so revolutionary. Most non-white actors couldn't find work in America because the code limited them to minor, and quite frankly, racist supportive roles. It's partially why (the main reason was obviously plain racism) so many characters of colour were played by white actors, because the code forbade actors of different races to be involved, even if the characters they played were. By no means did I mean to support it.

The rules today are very skewed even if they aren't as bad as they used to be I will say. The distinction that foul language is bad for children, but providers like HBO can have a mandatory number of scenes that depict nudity and sex in each of their shows. That sort of thing.
