(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 12:22 am (UTC)(link)I don't know, I guess I just think that they're writing themselves into too many walls, even if they do find a way through it always leads back to the same room. (If that makes sense?)
A lot of it just seems like more of the same, which is ridiculous because I could have watched Micheal re-set the original scenario a thousand times and not get bored. I mentioned a lot of why in a previous reply, but I guess it's just a mix of not liking where they're taking the characters, and liking the first seasons too much that the last few can't really compete.

In S2, busted by Michael (and vice versa) they get set on repeat simulation as he tries to prove it wasn't a bad theory, just a bad execution, seriously! And they end up scheming with Michael to try to get out of the Bad Place...together! The train goes off the tracks, literally. And they turn Michael, which is another great twist. And we meet bad place Janet and the demons.
In S3, they trick the judge and end up alive again. Only Michael rigs the game, and they, in turn, learn the game is rigged. Once again, this is a pure exploration of ethics couched in hilarious metaphor shenanigans. Frog thermos guy! Corruption of the Highest officials! And it might have been my favorite season if only bc of Michael proposing to kill them constantly ("their bodies are mostly goo and juice and if you remove the juice, they die almost instantly") also Jeremy Bearimy and string theory and jeez the world building was essentially Dr. Seuss meets Neal Stephenson.
Anyway, so I don't know if you watched the ultra-precious bridge series where the Bad Place demons and Shawn pick out the 4 new test subjects but omg it's fucking awesome. Highly recommend.
Then we're on to season four, only 1 episode I've downloaded yet, but already boring demon lady had me shit my pants bec of course being boring is punishable by going to the Bad Place, I was thinking.
The delightful repercussions of trying to remove all external factors in order to "prove" that humans can improve in goodness is making my brain twist. I have faith that the crew will break the bounds of weirdness just as effectively this season as they have the last 3. They weren't repeating anything. They were constantly introducing new concepts and characters. (Dennis, the middle place, Evil Janet, Janet's 'verse, Shawn and the demons, etc.)

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 07:51 am (UTC)(link)Hmm, I suppose so. I haven't really put all the different season together in perspective like that before. There definitely has been some great moments across all of them. Some of the 'wow' moments did get a bit lost to me in the third season especially. I actually did like the 'back to being alive' sequence quite a bit.
I'll be sure to look up the bridge series! Hopefully the rest of the season will have me changing my tune, and I'll fall back in love with it!

I wasn't trying to convince you to fall in love again, just...I do feel they kept opening new avenues. But yeah, they are reaching the end of what they can explore, which is why this is the last season. :) I hope it's good.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 09:50 am (UTC)(link)Thank you! I'll be sure to watch it right away!

You made some really great points, I'm glad you're enjoying it as much as you are. I think I'm the one trying to convince myself to fall back in love, tbh. You are right though. When I think about it, I definitely have my ideas about how the series will end, but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised at all if they threw something in from left field that I would never expect.
