I don't think there's anything ethically wrong with asking for donations (altho it's fair for AO3 to not want people to do it on their platform, that's not the place for it) and I don't think it's right or reasonable to report it. Just scroll by if you don't like it. People are out here trying to survive.

AO3 is non-profit. Having people try and profit from it could lead to the site getting closed down. So even if OP's comes off as petty, they're not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that follows at all. AO3 has good justifications for not wanting it on AO3, and OP has petty, bad justifications for not wanting to donations to exist at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You might not agree with op's reasons, but I'm not sure they're petty.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How are they not petty? Being annoyed by it because it's "panhandling" is like the definition of petty.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I don't like it when strangers ask me for money, either. That seems fair, especially if doing so violates AO3's rules.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
not having them on AO3 fair enough - it is against their ToS, but calling it panhandling, for mentioning it in an a/n when they have spent hours writing something which a reader is now enjoying for free? not the same.

I also don't have an issue with it beacuse a) easy to ignore b) most peeople don't even bother commenting, which is prettys shit and selfish really

(mind you, I also give people in need money when I have the spare, so maybe that is why I have a different view).

It's a writer's choice to write fanfiction. Nobody's forcing them to spend hours writing it without pay. Most people write fanfiction with the full understanding that they're doing so for fun, not for compensation... because that's how fanfiction and most fanworks have worked for quite some time.

I don't object to people putting a ko-fi, etc. widget on their personal pages, but your argument is pretty feeble.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
This. People have been writing fanfiction for fun (and for free) for decades. If you want to spend hours writing something and get paid for it, write your own original works. That's easier to do now than ever before with the advent of self-publishing.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-08 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah and if you ask money for fanfiction I do hope you pay the original writer too, since you're taking advantage of them and their creation. You write fanfiction because it already has a fanbase and thus earning is easier, but very much questionable. Try making money with your own stuff.

Hey, could you give me some money :( My sisters brothers cousin got kicked out for being bi :( So... I... I mean they need like $600 .... :( So um... please give me some money. I am literally the only person on the internet who needs money so, uh, you're all kinda scum for not giving me any.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
^ Yep. This is why it's not "petty" to dislike being asked for money by randos on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I am literally the only person on the internet who needs money so, uh, you're all kinda scum for not giving me any.

I agree that any request for donations that includes this is BS. I've also literally never once seen a request for donations that includes this.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
People out here just trying to survive shouldn't be trying to put all their eggs in one basket. Yeah, you have a community of fans, but it's not a community for every need you need met, and shouldn't be.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
People out here just trying to survive shouldn't be trying to put all their eggs in one basket.

Where is this coming from? I don't know what you mean in the context of this conversation

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Meaning that people should not live off donations from their readers. All their eggs in one basket means they are writing fic solely for profit and not for fun, which is what fandom is supposed to be.

Some authors really try to lay on the guilt trip like they can't pay their bills if people don't donate instead of getting an actual job that guarantees at least minimum wage. I know, nobody wants to work but don't guilt trip people into donating.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Or they do both?

Minimum wage is not enough to live on, dude. You're assuming these people don't have minimum wage jobs and still can't make ends meet. Which is, you know, normal. How fucking privileged are you that you can pay all your bills and still have enough for food?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know right?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
OR you could vote in a govt that cares for its citizens instead of begging off those who already have.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
You actually think that most people are writing Stucky porn to supplement their income, and you think AYRT is the privileged one? LOL.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
But some people cannot "just" get a job that guarantees at least minimum wage. Because they're disabled, because the job market sucks, because plenty of reasons.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-12 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's against their rules. So it is right and reasonable to report it.
