You're not wrong, and if you look at the film's conception story, it's pretty obvious that Elsa was meant to be the villain, was rendered too sympathetic, and ooops now our film has no ~evil villain~, just disastrous lack of communication fucking up everything, what do

There's this one-second shot in his first scene that makes it supremely difficult for me to accept that he was evil all along, and that just killed the entire film, for me.

Well, that and the snowman.
