Oh, c'mon. The characters are not human. They're characters. Every character makes mistakes, gets hurt and stands up again. Buffy is not special at all.

then what makes a character believeable and how do you communicate their humanity?

Re: 153

By making them charismatic, by giving them specific individuality. A character with specific traits. It's not about making them "endearing" or "likable", it's about making them have a presence on screen. It's about making the character "stand-out". A single scene of a character enjoying the sky may be a better piece of characterization than a scene of the same character with a distorted face stating how alone he feels.

Interaction with the world is the main strength to a character. Is what defines his or her personality. Facial expressions and personal quirks are very important. The way in which a character moves, reacts and talks is essential. Backstory is secondary.

That's all true, but isn't really a response to the question I was asking. I think we're on very different pages with this discussion.

But they do that in Buffy. That's why I love the show.

But female characters are often just one note characters. They're only there to be love interests, for example. The women in Buffy are fully realised characters, not stereotypes or just there to be victims/love interests/bake pie. I don't think Buffy is unique is showing this but it did become extremely popular and opened the door for other female characters.

Jumping in to say, Anonymous can speak for her(?)self, but I'm sure she knows Buffy is not a real human being; that's not necessary or helpful to point out.

I think what she's getting at is that the writers took care to make Buffy into a well-rounded, naturalistic character instead of relegating her to a flat caricature, which is the sadly common lot for female TV characters. Just being a richly textured woman with agency is a feminist move.

ETA:.....Aaaaand that took eight minutes too long to type. Sorry.

Buffy isn't real? DDDDDDD: Then who is protecting us from the vampires and demons and forces of darkness??????

THANK YOU! That indeed was what I was trying to say but it's late here and I'm running on very little sleep and it's been a long day. Thanks for coming to my rescue :) As you said, simply having girls and women who are protaganists and have minds of their own is a huge step.

Heh, no problem! And I just realized I did the frakking math wrong -- I was *six* minutes too late. You're clearly not the only one who needs a nap. :)
