He doesn't die helping Mello, he gets killed helping Mello. There's nothing heroic or romantic (in ANY sense) about his death, he just gets shot when he doesn't expect it. People just attach meaning to it, making him even more of a prop. Sure he took risks for Mello, but that's what friends do. Doesn't change the fact that there's no personality in the 16 panels Matt's in.

Also, it's Light.

Yeah, we give meaning cause that's what fandom does.

Yes, that is what fandom does. I'm just saying I think your meaning is wrong and misplaced. It's like loving that motorcycle jerk Light kills in the first volume. He could have easily been anybody else, his death had about as much relevance to the plot, and he had about as much screen time and background.

And yeah, you can pick alot of other unimportant characters, but with Matt it makes a bit of sense. He was in Wammy's. He was 3rd, in fact. He helps Mello, and he dies, fighting Kira. We have some facts to make up a background. Of course, it's fanon, but it's the same for 90% of fandom stuff, right?
