You’re going to think I’m a nutter, but regardless of their intentions that’s just how it turned out. It doesn’t matter if they meant to imply or, like in this case, didn’t – it’s like the characters take on a life of their own, you know? Joe and David have such unbelievable chemistry and play the characters in such a way that yea, for me? Totally canon.

I’m probably delusional, but after The Shrine the two of them will always be in love to me. :D

Oh, no! I don’t think you’re a nutter. I think I agree with you in some sense. In terms of the writers’ intentions, I don’t think you can call it “canon” because they don’t see John and Rodney as attracted to each other/a couple/etc. But in terms of the characters taking on a life of their own, I feel the same way. They kind of…transcend the intended canon. Ok, now I sound like a nutter :D

Yea, I realize it's not canon to them and they didn't mean for us to see John and Rodney's relationship that way (At least initially. After awhile I think they just went with it. It's still not 'canon' but they know what makes us happy and they have fun with that), and I'm okay with that. Like I said, it's rare pairings I ship are actually canon but...there's just something about John and Rodney. It's hard to explain, but it's like I don't even care that the writers didn't intentionally put them together, in my head they are. And their characters in canon love each other ... Which probably makes no sense, but. *shakes head* J&R do weird things to me.

I can't think of a better way to explain it than you did. 'Transcend the intended canon' is perfect. I just think Joe and David play them sort of gay for each other, even if it's unintentional.

That brings up the subject of actor intention vs writer intention. If the actors are intending for us to read the characters one way while the writers are oblivious to it, can it be considered canon? (I vote yes:)

I agree. And personally? If the actors intend it to be one way, I take that as canon. They're just as much a part of the show and the story, and they certainly know their own characters well enough to understand them and their feelings.
