I think authorial intent...well, it should be respected to a point. But the author doesn't get to stand by my shoulder and tell me what they thought--if it doesn't come through the medium, it's fair game. Example: I know logically that JKR wrote Ron and Hermione to be a cute relationship, and that her intent was when they got together, people would be happy. When I read it, I thought they were absolutely horrible and still can't actually imagine a permenant romantic relationship between the two being happy (I don't ship them with anyone else; I just hate that relationship). I know the author's intent...I just can't make it work for me.

This this this. Sometimes pairings just feel forced even when they're canon-- I've never read Harry Potter, but I've heard plenty of people complaining about how the romantic relationships in that series just seemed sort of pulled out of nowhere.

To use an example from something I've been into recently, Emil/Marta is the canon pairing in Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatosk, but to me it just felt like the writers were trying too hard to make it work and kind of forcing it down your throat. (And this is coming from someone who ships Lloyd/Colette like burning.) In contrast, I saw a lot more honest-to-goodness chemistry between Richter and Emil in their interactions, so even though it's not the canon pairing, that's what I ship. There's certainly enough subtext there to use as grounds for a pairing.

So yeah, the authorial INTENT may have been Emil/Marta, but in my eyes it fell flat. I don't want to write fic about something that just doesn't work for me at all; if I'm going to write romantic fic for that fandom, it's going to be Richter/Emil because they've got more chemistry in my mind.
