I think if the casting for Carcer was open to anyone providing they were male and within a particular age bracket, and the guy they chose played the best version of him and just happened to be black, then why shouldn't he get the part? If it was only open to black people, less good, obviously.

Carcer just needs to be played well, be lightly menacing, do that aggravating little laugh (Haha!), and always have another knife. It doesn't really matter what he looks like if the guy who plays him is having a nice time and it sets a risky precedent if you suddenly decide that black people can never play villains ever because it's racist.

If you want black good guys and always white bad guys, wait for a TV version of Rivers of London, you'll be a lot happier.

Mostly I'm leery about Cheery. Cheery isn't gender fluid like her actor. Cheery's a woman. She's very definitely a woman. She makes it very clear. The only reason she keeps the beard is that just because she's a woman, that doesn't mean she's not a dwarf, and they have beards. So she has pretty dresses and makeup and the beard. The fact that she openly presents as a woman in a society where male is the default and feminine presentation isn't really allowed is a massive plot point, so I'm sort of unsure.

Unless, of course, the actor is referring to the fact that both they and the character present in an atypical fashion for their respective societies and have stuff in common that way, then sure. If they make Cheery non-binary however, I'm going to be mad.
