(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)...he smiled all the time, in a cheerful chirpy sort of way, and he acted like the kind of rascal who made a dodgy living selling gold watches that go green after a week. And he appeared to be convinced, utterly convinced, that he never did anything really wrong. He'd stand there amid the carnage, blood on his hands and stolen jewellery in his pocket, and with an expression of injured innocence declare, 'Me? What did I do?'
And it was believable right up until you looked hard into those cheeky, smiling eyes, and saw, deep down, the demons looking back.
During the course of the book Night Watch, Carcer and Vimes are sent back in time. Vimes cons his way into a job by assuming the identity of a dead man (who is implied to have been murdered by Carcer). Carcer gets a job in the secret police by being a horrible sadistic maniac and - and this is important - winning over a murderous phrenologist. You know, phrenology, the 'science' based around the idea that the more traditionally 'white' your features are, the less likely you are to be a criminal.
Oh, and it is made perfectly clear over the course of several books that racism exists in this fantasy world and in this fantasy city, so even without the specific character of the phrenologist, it's all a bit hard to credit.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)From what I recall off the top of my head, this seems to vary a lot based on the requirements of the plot - there's the whole book where everyone is racist against Klatchians bc they're going to war, but there's also the parts where Pratchett outright says that human beings are too busy being racist against dwarves and trolls to be racist about skin color, which I guess is still racism but not really the kind that's relevant here

(Anonymous) 2019-10-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)Nanny Ogg had found a friend. Her name was Mrs Pleasant, she was a cook, and she was the first black person Nanny had ever spoken to.*
*Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because - what with trolls and dwarfs and so on - speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green.
Make of that what you will!

(Anonymous) 2019-10-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)Carcer Dun, a mysterious figure wronged by injustice seeking to change not just his own destiny, but the fate of Ankh-Morpork and everyone in it, as vengeance.
He's probably an antihero antagonist instead of an unrepentant sadist :/
