Have you been talking to my sister? She was recently talking about how it bugs her that Harry Styles gets all the attention now. She does like him and listens to his music, but she also wishes people would appreciate the other guys.

Yeah, but the Beatles had four popular members out of four, each with a different angle, like the Spice Girls. Smart Spice, Sexy Spice, Shy Spice, Sweetie Spice.

You do realize that they have little to no control over their positioning within the boy band, right. You can resent them for it, sure, but the 'leader' of a boy band is chosen specifically around who's the most marketable. If an artist isn't comfortable with their positioning, chances are they'll just be phased out.
Boy Bands, or rather most young with stars in their eyes, particularly in the 90's, have their aspirations used against them in leu of abuse and unfair contracts. I recall either N*SYNC, or The Backstreet Boys, (I've always confused the two) have come out to say that their manager/producer regularly sexually assaulted them, and threatened them with being thrown out of the band, and breach of contract if they refused/told anyone.

I do realize, that's why I mentioned both promotion and the fanbases in the comment. Yes, struggling music artists, especially young ones, can be easily manipulated and taken advantage of and yes, it does happen. (It was a member of LFO that alleged sexual misconduct against Lou Pearlman, manager to many musical acts, including *NSync and Backstreet Boys. *NSync sued and won for unfair contracts, and as a matter of fact, all of the musical acts, except US5, that worked with Pearlman, including the Backstreet Boys sued him in federal court for misrepresentation and fraud, but I think most settled.) But I don't think they have no agency - they are still responsible for their own choices, good, bad, and ugly. That doesn't mean that everything they ever do in service of chasing success gets excused. And while I think Justin Timberlake did do a couple of shady (not terrible) things, I think both were just more passively accepting of unfair practices in their respective brandings than anything else, which is why I only sort of resent them.

Harry wishes he could be Justin Timberlake. In fact, I would argue he isn’t even the Justin Timberlake of One Direction, that’s probably Zayn. Zayn doesn’t even tour/do concerts and he has more fame and exposure than Harry who to the general public is either known for - outside of being in 1D - 1) being in that Nolan movie 2) dating Taylor Swift for .5 seconds and/or 3) batshit larries and weirdo fanfic obsession.

As a fortysomething who hasn't listened to pop music in 30 years and sees five or less movies a year: who's Zayn? I know who Harry is of course since he's been in some movies and stuck out even in an ensemble cast. But I have never heard of Zayn and that's a very memorable name.

It's weird because as a casual music listener, Harry is the member I think of first, but I could name more songs by Niall than him. IDK if it's just my location, but Harry's stuff doesn't get played much on the radio stations I listen to.

The last I checked, a lot of Harry's stuff isn't really pop. It has a very classic rock mixed with modern rock sound, to me, plus a bit of indie I guess. Which isn't really the genre nexus you want to hit in order to get major airplay at the moment.

I don't agree with this at all. I think Harry Has the strongest sound by far. His voice is plenty strong and has way more character than the others'. Plus, he appears to actually be a good song writer, and holy crap the dude has stage presence for days.

I was never into 1D at all. Not even a little. But when I first heard Style's first single Sign Of The Times I was like, "Hang on a minute, is this guy actually good?" And I listened to his solo album and had to admit it was really solid.

As for JT, I don't know if I really care for him as an artist, but I find it kind of undeniable that his sound was good for the genre he was in, and he had a lot of that stand-out "It" quality that big celebs tend to have. I was an N*Sync fan back in the day, and JT wasn't my favorite back then, but once he went solo it became pretty apparent that N*Sync had been 70% him and 30% everyone else.

Musical taste can be subjective. Louis Tomlinson is my favorite from One Direction and I would call him the weakest singer of the five (good, but not as good as the others), but his voice is the most interesting of the five, to me, and I like his songwriting. But, I believe both Zayn Malik and Liam Payne have strong voices and more vocal range than Harry Styles. I'm not a fan of how Zayn Malik left and I think it is amazing how quickly they reworked their songs and that they sound almost as good without him.

I don't agree about *NSync. I do think Justin Timberlake is absolutely stellar at promotion, but he wasn't 70%.

Zayn and laim are the better singers i am a fan and i was a zayn fan before harry fan harry has been i movie and unlike zayn harry has one album zayn has two and zayn and the others regularly put out music so maybe harry gets the most. Press if your only seeing press on him. Louis was a child actor and laim and louis have kids they dont want the drama also i am pretty sure nial laim and zayn have to most accolades for the music they have done

It happens, anon, it just does. There's never a "fair" division of fame among band members.

/Personally, I find HS's solo output to be slightly more memorable that the others, but that's just because he's more into the music I acctually like (and I do like that he's not really going that hard for the top of teh charts). If it helps, if he continues to grow his career the way he does, he might no longer be the most famous former OD member in 5 or 6 years. There's way more money and popularity in more RnB- and dance-influenced sound.
