Streaming is bigger than ever.

DVDs are out and Blurays are moving that way. What will you miss most about physical media other than owning it?

The smell. I really love how new DVDs and CDs smell.

The depressing reality that we're going to have a massive loss of film history once physical media stops being produced. This is already happening in video games, and there are entire organizations scrambling to pull data and catalog as many games as they possibly can before they simply deteriorate beyond use so that there's some kind of backup.

The ritual of buying/having it delivered/opening it and putting it into the player.

Fun extras! Streaming a movie is nice but I miss DVD commentaries and bloopers and such. Hopefully collector's editions will still be a thing, just thinking of the sheer level of content on things like the LOTR discs that would be lost in an all-streaming world makes me sad.

Space on my consoles when it comes to games, and not losing out on a movie I bought just because the service doesn't want to host it anymore. Also they're shiny.

Gag reels.

The confidence that, no matter what, I will have that DVD until such a time as I decide to get rid of it. Unlike with streaming, were I can watch the movies and TV shows until the service loses the rights or just decides to take them down.

for real. anyone who thinks that a physical disc I can watch whenever is inferior to being at the whims of licensing agreements needs to get the fuck outta here with that.

there is literally no streaming service currently offering Beetlejuice. We had to buy the dvd in order to watch it for Halloween. if that option ever fully goes away and there are no physical copies of anything anymore? fuck that.

Whut. That's ridiculous. Plus it's an example of how easily things can disappear, or be yanked by corporations or governments. That's really scary.

There is, though? It's on Amazon, you just have to rent it.

NAYRT, or any of the anons in this thread so far, but AYRT’s point still stands—there will be movies and shows and documentaries that won’t be available to see anywhere if the option to purchase a physical copy goes poof.

This. I like having copies of stuff so I can watch it whenever I want.

I will miss the fact that the thing I bought will be mine permanently and not just until my hardrive dies or the service goes down prompting me to have to buy it again.

I miss going to the video store as a kid but then again there is one actually nearby me
