Yeah, not a huge fan of this either, but it is a shounen staple, so... Eh, not surprising. I don't know. I haven't been back after reading the current arc in the anime and hearing about this turn of events did not make me eager to go back to it.

I've never seen My Hero Academia, but I've read a lot of shonen manga that has that problem. Like Ichigo from Bleach ended up being damn near everything and it was really boring.

Ugh, Ichigo was the worst offender for this.

Though Eren Jeager is getting close.

Ugh. Eren Jaeger's the worst.

I hate everything about him.

i don't disagree with you but aot's not really a shounen, it's a seinen

(Anonymous) 2019-10-17 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's shounen. It tries to be more, but it's just not.

Man, what the hell is even going on in SnK anymore? Everything I've seen Eren looks like the villain now.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-17 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god... Ichigo was shinigami/fullbringer/quincy was the most ridiculous thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah this is an unfortunate character trait most shonen protagonists have.

OT, but this comment reminded me of a 1-vol shonen/seinen manga that iirc dodged this by having the male protagonist’s female love interest be - and remain! - the fighter of an evil force that keeps getting stronger - but when he realizes he really can’t “power-up” himself to help her physically fight, he starts shopping with her for new weapons and knitting her warm clothes for her nightly patrols. (Also, any chance anyone else might remember the title of this?)
