People have tried to explain to me why the romance in Final Fantasy VIII makes sense and I can almost see where they come from. But currently replaying the PS4 edition I once again realised it will never not be terrible to me and Rinoa will never stop looking like a creepy borderline stalker and all of Squall's friends creepy meddlesome people who kept pushing the guy into a relationship he didn't want. Not that Squall is a flawless woobie character but the way everyone around him behaves in regards to the romance is skeevy at best.

The characters and romance totally fell flat. I don't even know where Squall's sudden burst of emotions came from at the beginning of (the original PS's) disc 2. Supposedly they were supposed to have a chance at love because their parents never really had the chance? It's like destiny and kawaii desu~~ =^_^=. Or something. Been a long time.

My headcanon is still that she (although unknowingly) bewitched him with her new-won powers because I can't really explain that complete 180 he does any other logical way.

Because a lot of what's going on is Squall shutting people away from him because he was afraid of being abandoned, and Rinoa recognized that between their argument in Timber and then his outburst in Galbadia Garden when he was spiraling after Seifer's supposed death. Rinoa then began, because she's a lot more empathetic than the literal child soldiers, trying to actually be there for him because abandonment issues suck, and that blossomed into more because she became a solid force in his life that wasn't letting anything budge her and he attached hard as the flip side of his abandonment issues. It's basically them helping each other heal into more healthy people because like. Every single one of them is fucked up.

It was meant to reference their parents' romances as kind of foils (Laguna knew very little about Julia in reality and kind of just thought she was pretty and played piano well, whereas he was the first person to treat her like a person--meanwhile Raine and Laguna actually knew a lot more about each other, and it's very clear that Fury Caraway was quite in love with Julia).

The biggest problem is that so much of the romance is optional.

Also a lot of Squall's internal dialogue is very different in Japan and he does a lot more internal emoting vs "......................" in English.

Except.. not really. She'd been pushy and annyoing from the start. She also kept hitting on him in a way that wouldn't have been nearly as cutesy if the genders were reversed (same for the way everyone kept pushing Squall toward her). And no amount of "she was only trying to make him open up" can explain away the downright creepy "oh hey, I'll make couple jewelry out of that thing you're wearing teehee" stalker move.

I mean if that's the take you're going with, obviously no one's going to change your mind. I never saw her as pushy and annoying. I saw her as a teen girl with a crush. And teens rarely make mature, reasoned decisions. "Stalker move" jfc that's applying so much malice where it doesn't belong.
