145. Douchebaggery to hide his agenda still makes him a douchebag--it's not like he was suppressing a nice personality and agonizing over his need to bully his students. The way he treated Neville alone can't be excused as just being a teacher--any teacher treating his students that way in the real world would be facing a hell of a lot of angry parents. Snape is certainly admirable in some aspects, but what makes him interesting is that a lot of his behavior really, really isn't. And I say this as a Snape fan.

The pet poisoning was him feeding Neville's botched potion to Trevor, I think? My memory sucks.

Yeah, I was kind of out of it when I was writing this one.

I gave the guy way too much credit. He was a douche, and that's what I meant to say, but it ended up coming out all, "OMG, Snape is perfect!" Lol, did not mean that at all.

I think he only threatened to do it though. He probably enjoyed how much it frightened Neville, but I don't know if he would have actually gone through with it.

[identity profile] megglez13.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
No, he definitely did it. I mean, Hermione did help Neville fix it, so Trevor wasn't harmed, but as to whether Snape knew that or not... who knows.

What? When was this? I have completely forgotten about it, it seems!

Any students in the real world who nearly killed one of their classmates as a joke and showed no remorse wouldn't have not been expelled, and they certainly wouldn't have been awarded with the Head Boy position when they'd continued bullying that student for the next two years.

It's no excuse, but I think we have to remember that a lot of the BS that happens in Hogwarts would never happen in the real world, and not just because of magic. The level of bullying amongst not only the teachers-to-students (Umbridge, Filch, Snape) but between students (The Marauders -> Snape and any other students, the records of their detentions Harry had to copy seem to implicate them bullying a vast number of students, also the Weasley Twins -> Slytherins, the boy they pushed into the Vanishing Cupboard because he tried to take points and there wasn't anyone there to see them do it, found a week later and was disoriented and confused for weeks afterward) is incredibly high.

I think, honestly, it's more an issue of JKR polarizing and exaggerating to an extreme the faults of her characters. The fact that the bullying that Snape does is so greatly scorned by all of the characters (and JKR herself) is very hypocritical. Not that he shouldn't be scorned for it, but meanwhile there are other characters that do it equally as viciously, much more physically, and with seemingly no punishment that has any affect. Dumbledore himself and most of the teachers have seemingly no concern about it, even when it's a seriously dangerous "prank". Rather, these characters are rewarded for being clever and strong, socially and also through the opinions of their schoolteachers and other adults around them. It would never happen that way. Boys like James and Sirius and Fred and George would have had friends in school, certainly, and people that thought they were amusing. But there would have been a much higher number of people who found them to be cruel and bullies, and their 'inner goodness' wouldn't really absolve them of their crimes, either.

With the poisoning, it was actually him taking Neville's completed potion and giving it to his pet - the fact that Neville often botches his potions probably influenced his comment which was something along the lines of 'lets hope this doesn't poison him'. I don't remember the exact line, either, but I'm fairly certain that Snape didn't actually poison him.

What you said.

For that matter, no school in the "real world" would let eleven-year-olds play games that involve being targeted by heavy objects while suspended forty feet in the air. *eyerolling* The wizarding world clearly expects its members to suck it up and deal, from a very early age, and about a lot more serious things than "the real world" would ever consider.

Snape's a petty bullying git, yes. But Dumbledore uses all of Hogwarts as his personal resume-booster and war machine; the twins are at least as bad as Snape and yet are glamourised -- even though they used Neville as their experimental animal rather than Neville's pet; and "wonderful, kind" Professor Lupin nearly initiated a bloodbath by somehow "forgetting" to take a potion that is hand-delivered to him every day.
