107 & 111

Cry moar.

Having your post-DH fic and pet ships ruined because the writer dared to give us canon doesn't make it bad. Get over yourselves.

If she didn't give you canon I get the feeling you'd be in the OP's position.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
....Everything she writes is canon. Thus the fact that she wrote the epilogue indicates that she gave us canon.

Re: 107 & 111

...

Alright, you didn't catch what I said.

You sound like the kind of person who would be bitching and crying over their ship if it didn't turn out to be canon.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank you for rephrasing your unintelligible remark. It is appreciated.

I only get emotionally attached when the eventual fruition of my ship is glaringly obvious from a very early point in time.

And I tend not to ship hardcore in any other fandom, so unfortunately I am unable to prove or disprove your assumption at this point in time.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] sovietkiki.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 111 may have been referring to the writing style. I'm not even a Harry Potter fan, but that Epilogue was shit compared to the rest of her stuff, IMHO.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, the epilgoue was written in the exact same style as the first book of the series was written in, and I assume that this was an intentional shift used to show that Harry's adult life is peaceful and relatively stress-free.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
No, it was because she wrote it when she wrote the first book, and didn't really bother beta-ing. It was emphatically not a conscious choice (heck, I've been through enough critiques to recognise the "Wha--oh, oh yeah, I totally meant to do that! Because it's...what'd you say? Yeah, deep and stuff!") When you write seven freaking books, unless you are Doing It Wrong, your writing style will improve from the first to the last (although I think the writing style in the last was a bit abysmal. How abysmal was pointed out last night by a friend of mine for whom English is a second language, so if it's that noticeable...).

But then, if you assume people don't like it because Wah, she sunk our ship, then...yeesh. Fenm said it for me. No one said ships, mate. You're leaping to that conclusion all on your lonesome.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, you are correct, I had forgotten that piece of trivia. I'm not going to get into analysis of writing tyles with you because that all comes down to personal opinion; and I personally took no issue with the way it was written; it felt right in terms of the rest of the series..

I'm leaping to that conclusion based on behaviors I have seen in this fandom, that's all; it is obviously a generalization. Mate.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I'm pretty sure she bothered "beta-ing." That's what editors are for.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't think the editing was as effective on the last two books. Especially the last one. She was running on a really tight deadline, and she was already the Great and Mighty Rowling. I don't think in an average case most editors would've let it go without...there were just a lot of things that seemed poorly thought out, or as if they could've been executed better.

Re: 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Going by my many years spent in the HP fandom, most of the butthurt tends to stem from shipping woes. This does not apply to all, obviously.

Re: 111

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, there's a lot of butthurt over shipping in HP fandom (and I'll admit I've done it myself). But in my experience when discussing the epilogue, specifically, there are many, many, ma-he-ny people who hate it for reasons that have nothing to do with shipping. I'm fine with all the ships in the epilogue and I still don't like it.

Re: 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's cool, I wish I had encountered more of those types during my time in the HP fandom.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I actually thought the writing was very mismatched with the rest of the book. I mean, it was like hearing a fairy tale ending told by an eleven-year old. As I really liked the way the writing style matured with each book as Harry grew older, it was rather jarring when the maturity level of the narrator suddenly seemed to regress.

The ships were utterly unsurprising, of course; they'd been clear to me since the second book. I would have liked to be surprised, but it's not like I was actually expecting her to pair Harry up with Draco (but imagine the reactions! *happy sigh*).

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It was mismatched, and the commenter above you so helpfully pointed out, it was written at the same time as SS/PS, so I guess it made sense. At first I was like WTF IS THIS SHIT but then I read it a few more times and it started to feel right; Harry got what he wanted, and the tone of it felt right for the context.

Yeah, I never understood ship wars because the two main ships have been blindingly obvious to me since Cos. *shrug* I guess other people read it differently, or something....

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I get not liking the ships, because we all have different tastes, but not realizing they were going to happen? They must have really been trying not to see it.

Personally, I would have preferred Harry to have realized that a true family is made up by those you love, and not necessarily the construct of the perfect family he had built up in his head. And I think that sort of ending would have fit better with what the story had become - I think Rowling had developed her themes too much for the simplistic and one-dimensional epilogue she had written several years earlier.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously!

I dunno, I kind of like that he sort of ended up with what he saw in the Mirror. It kind of brings it all in a full circle.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
That was probably what she was going for too, but it just didn't work very well for me. I'm not fond of the similarities between Harry and Ginny and his parents, though I know many people find it very cute.

I think it's because the story was rather original in many other ways that my mind rebelled at the conservative take on the relationships.

Re: 107 & 111

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I found the similarities to be a bit off-putting, but then, Harry seems like who might like those similarites, so....
