Bitch, shit just got personal.

I'm tired and therefore won't spend too much of my time defending someone who does not exist, but the fact that you invested this must hatred into one inanimate person is kind of amazing. He's not Hitler or something. He is an amazing character, both complex and deep. I agree on the fact that people who are "OMG TEH SNAPE HAWT AND EMO" are pretty scary and stupid, but so are the people like this, who are "OMG SNAPE IS TEH EVILZ", and for the same reasons. You see only what's on the surface, nothing more (in either direction). His character can really be argued either way, and the ambiguity is the reason he is my favorite character. I like him as a person because I find him funny, intelligent, and a morally good person. Do you really think that poison would have killed Trevor? And hey, didn't Neville turn out to be a toughass after all? I kinda did just spend too much of my time defending Snape, but hey, he is my favorite. Troubled, yes. Disturbing, a bit. But as far as disgusting or morally reprehensible? Eh, he's about on par with Hester Prynne.

I was doubtful of what the OP was on about concerning Snape's fans, but you just made it all crystal clear. So it's "morally good" to vent your frustrations on innocent children? As a teacher? And putting Neville through years of emotional distress is okay because he didn't break down from it in the end?

Good job, you made me agree with the person you're ranting against.

Ever considered that expression an opinion is not all about swaying you?

Just because he is morally good, it doesn't mean he's not a total jackass. Yes, he is a jerk, I don't deny that. And he did some very rude thing but what makes him, in the moral aspect, "good" is that he is working always for the right cause. Yes, he goes about it in an assholish way, but that's not to say that he is evil. Just because someone is a jerk does not mean they're evil, and just because they are nice does not mean they are the messiah. I personally like Snape for his depth- he is a gray area for which you can argue either way, good or bad. His moral ambiguity is part of his intrigue and though vague, I believe he is, at least in the very innermost part of the character, "good". He is a character in a book, and he did his office. He intrigued people, and in my opinion, almost directly brought about the fall of Voldemort. Yes, he was a jerk, but there are many of those, and that doesn't mean that, when push comes to shove, those jerks will not do the right thing.
