In Defense of Snape:

(Anonymous) 2008-10-22 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
145: So the idea of a cover identity has never occurred to you? That what he portrayed and what he felt were sometimes totally opposite? That he needed to be despised to keep himself from being suspect?

I like the character (don't find him sexy; sorry, yicky!) because he's deeply flawed, we were both bullied, and he rose above. He had problems -- and he never overcame all of them. He did not want to hurt people... But sometimes he couldn't stop himself, and sometimes he had to for the job.

But if you can't get past the 'omg, he would have poisoned a low intelligence vertebrate.

Was he sadistic and vindictive? Yes. Was he a broken husk of a man? Certainly. Did this make him, over all, a bad man? Maybe to some. But you seem to think that he genuinely enjoyed all of it, when he expresses regret and frustration in his flashbacks. But of course, they're SKEWED from his perspective, right?

Divergent point: I bet you think James Potter was gonna grow up to be great man, a wonderful husband and father. Hate to tell you: He wasn't. Bullies that don't get punished keep bullying all their lives. They like the power, they like the rush. James would have never stopped -- he probably would have become a tyrant to his wife and child. If Severus is a bad man for doing things to children and a toad -- what does that make James Potter? Or did nobody think that Peter Pettigrew grew tired of being one bully's lacky and traded to another?

(There were no good adult role models in HP; hell, there were no good role models in HP period except maybe Neville who finally grew a spine and let his testicles drop.)

I wonder if part of the problem is just the way the books are set up as whodunnits. I mean yeah Snape has his humanity and all that, but for nearly the whole series, except for the pensieve flashback in OOTP, he's been shown as, yes, genuinely getting pleasure from being an ass to everyone. And then we get the big reveal chapter in DH that he's REALLY a big hero and he did it for love so it makes everything ok. It's the actively bullying his students and people who DON'T deserve it for 6 books that makes it harder for me to accept the whole "Albus Severus" thing. But JKR loves her big secrets and big reveals, and there are some characters and character arcs that suffer for it. She just succeeded too well in making us hate the guy that I just don't have that kind of sympathy for him. Admittingly, part of that is also due to some kerfuffles with hardcore Snape apologists who can't even think of ANY wrong he's done whatsoever.

For what it's worth, I'm fascinated by the dynamic of James and Lily precisely because I don't think it would have really worked out between them had they survived. I dunno about him being a tyrant, but I picture him as the kind of guy who once he found out the girl of his dreams was a human being with actual flaws, he wouldn't be able to handle it. I think Snape couldn't either, really. They both strike me as being more in love with the ideal of Lily rather than her as a human. Or maybe I'm just projecting, due to my annoyance of Lily being written as this flawless woman.
But speaking of James, I would have liked to see at least a little indication that Snape secretly hated Draco cause good God he is absolutely everything Snape hated about James. I know, I know, keeping up appearances by favoring the children of Death Eaters but doesn't it pain Snape at all that his own house seems to be made up of idiots? Part of that is JKR's failure to write even ONE Slytherin as competent! I would so love some scene where Snape just explodes and rants and rails about this prize-winning idiocy of Draco and his henchmen:)

Discounting Lupin's behavior in DH (I love the idea of Tonks/Lupin but in the books it just played out as a contrived attempt to produce a war orphan at the end), he is definitely a good role model. He is everything a teacher and mentor should be, and, well, I could probably fill out an essay on his awesomeness. I'd say Luna's a role model too (well, mine at any rate:), she proudly stands out and is a helluva lot more perceptive that people give her credit for.

I like the character (don't find him sexy; sorry, yicky!) because he's deeply flawed, we were both bullied, and he rose above.

He didn't rise above it. In fact, upon learning that the man who bullied him through school was around he lost his mind and he started shrieking at people because he simply couldn't handle the idea that he might have not been guilty. Instead of listening to the points that hey, Pettigrew was around, instead he wanted to give him over to Dementors, and when Sirius' innocence was proved he took to goading how he could walk around in free air to a man who he knew wasn't able to control himself because he could. He couldn't handle that Sirius got away so he took it out on Remus, who by all accounts, wasn't guilty of anything except being Sirius' best friend.

Further he torments an 11 year old boy because the boy looks like his father. I personally don't buy the cover identity business. He could have had a fine cover identity without hating Harry and lets face it, he did hate Harry.

I don't consider any of that "rising above it". In fact, I'd say he was quite well mired in it.

He's a complex character, yes. I won't disagree with that. But a good person bogged down by bad circumstances? I wouldn't say that.

"In fact, upon learning that the man who bullied him through school was around he lost his mind and he started shrieking at people because he simply couldn't handle the idea that he might have not been guilty."

A) he was unconscious during the revelation of Peter. Anything from Sirius mouth couldn't be trusted, any criminal would have lied about it. And Sirius, of course, had always convinced his friends that he wasn't bad no matter how cruel his actions. It's part of Sirius' character flaws.

B) It wasn't about Sirius being a bully. It was because he believed Sirius was guilty (as did the Ministry & everyone else, until Sirius' death), he believed Sirius had befuddled Remus & Harry the way he had done to Remus & James all those years (from Severus' perspective, of course). Which means that he thought Sirius was the one who had betrayed LILY. That is why he was so unhinged by it. In catching Sirius, he was avenging Lily's death and bringing himself some closure. In Sirius' escape, he was losing his opportunity to avenge Lily, and her murderer (again, in his perspective) had escaped with the help of her supposed friends.

Notice that when he interacts with Sirius at later moments, he is not nearly so unhinged or threatening. He is as antagonistic as he is with everyone, and it escalates because Sirius responds with antagonism as well. Both of them feed into that relationship.

As for Remus, the mistakes he made that year in school were terrible! He could have killed Harry, Ron, Hermione, Sirius, and Snape when he transformed on the school grounds because he had forgotten his potion. He also didn't give the authorities the very helpful information about Sirius being an animagus and the map that could help them catch him out of loyalty to Sirius, even when he also believed Sirius was a murderer and trying to kill Harry. The fact that Sirius was innocent doesn't change that Remus protected him even while thinking that Sirius was a murderer. That's enough reason for Remus to be axed, anyway. And Remus had to leave because he was the DADA teacher, the position is cursed. Severus told that Remus was a werewolf because he believes Remus to be dangerous (not just because of bias, also because of Remus' actions), and Harry & co assume it's because he hates Remus and only that.
