If I knew how to do that sparkly font, I would.

One of the greatest things about fiction IMO is that it enables you to sympathize with/see the humanity in people whom you would completely despise if you ever met in real life. The character in my icon thinks women are whores and goes around breaking people's fingers and manhandling elderly cancer patients. I think he's an amazing character. But if he were a real person, I'd want that smelly little psychopath behind bars, stat.

You can hate Snape all you want, but acting all huffy and morally superior to people who do like him? Uh...

Yeah but that's what the OPs taking issue with, people who DO like him as a person and not a character. There are whole legions of fans who don't even see ANYTHING wrong with what he did, think he's just a fantastic person, think he's the hero of the books, blah blah blah. I have seen fic and essays about him that are rational, that do appreciate his complexity as a character but with the assumption that yeah, he's a wee bit of a jerk. Nothing wrong with that. But when fangirls declare that oh he's just emo and a sexy misunderstood flawless genius... *bangs head against the wall*

True, I guess I've just found a disproportionate number of people "like him in canon" precisely because of a misunderstanding of his character. Sure not all of them are "OMGSEXYEMOSNAPE!", but endless justifications for why there's nothing wrong with his behavior whatsoever (at least most people defending him here on F!S admit that yeah he's not the nicest of guys) is at the root of it.
I haven't read Watchmen yet, but I can't imagine you wouldn't be just a little bothered if people started insisting that EVERYTHING Rorschach did was really a good thing and he was completely justified.
And I totally agree that the best characters can be the ones you'd hate in real life. There's just an idiotic vocal minority that doesn't make that distinction.

I think the secret could have been worded better, in any case. "I hate when people try to justify Snape's behavior!" rather than implying that people who like him and find his flaws interesting are messed up.
And there are, in fact, a small but disturbing contingent of Rorschach fans who describe him as "the only true hero in the story"; though I think that's mostly due to his actions in a particular scene towards the end. The other stuff I guess they justify by him being screwed in the head. :P
