145. I'm also a Lupin fan, but I actually think Severus was in the right when he outed Remus.

Think about the facts - first of all, and most obviously, Remus did not take his potion on the night of the moon. An unbelievably irresponsible move, which had him transform on grounds and with a number of students, putting all of their lives at serious risk. Severus is in the know that Remus was in the habit of running on Hogwarts grounds transformed as a student (which will make him doubt Remus' responsibility anyway), and has been making his potion every month to ensure that this doesn't happen accidentally.

The second thing that I think is incredibly important is this... Remus knew that Sirius was an animagus, and didn't give this information to the authorities. He also knew about the Marauder's Map, and he kept it despite the fact that Sirius almost certainly would have known a way to get it from him, and that if it was put into Sirius' hands he could so easily kill Harry. Both of these things should have been told to the people hunting Sirius, because at the time Remus (along with everyone else) believed Sirius was a murderer. Whatever loyalty it was that had Remus keep these important things from the authorities weren't based in knowing that Sirius wasn't guilty, it was in protecting a person he liked despite his supposed crimes.

Now, Sirius was innocent and wasn't trying to kill Harry, obviously. But since Remus didn't know that at the time, it is inexcusable that he didn't offer the information, because it was his responsibility to be protecting all the children in the school in any way he knew how. He also knew that Sirius was on/around Hogwarts by watching the map, and it wasn't until Sirius physically assaulted a 13 year old student (Ron, breaking his leg) that Remus actually confronted him.

I'm sure that Severus' bias against Remus & Sirius had a large part to do with outing Remus. However, I very seriously doubt that was the only contribution, and I think that Remus was irresponsible enough that it would have been the appropriate move for him to resign, anyway. I quite like Remus and I do wish he had used some sense in that part of the books, but he didn't. And the position being cursed means he couldn't have stayed longer than a year, anyway. Better this than him ending up killed, right?
