Wow. I was right there with OP, but now that you say this, I am totally fine with how old/bloated he looks. I wouldn't want anyone else in that role tbh <3 so I'm glad we at least have that.

I think they should have just left him out. There is nothing they can come up with to handwave his appearance. The comment or secret a while back about him looking like he ate a bee is spot on.

You could just headcanon that at this point in the future, android technology has developed to include a realistic aging process, and Data got those upgrades so he could "fit in" with his former crewmates or something. I don't know - to me, there's so much suspension of disbelief inherent in sci-fi like this, that "the actors are older" is not that hard to ignore, if it means I get to see what beloved characters are up to.

But in general, yes, I agree the CGI effect is super creepy (and disrespectful) and would really only work for robot characters.
