I still can't quite let go of my childhood belief that in times of worrying about my health, if I don't go to sleep I won't die. Rationally I know death doesn't work that way but any time I feel anxious to the point all I can concentrate on is my heartbeat (which may or may not be irregular), I revert to "well, nothing will happen to me if I just stay awake!"

Think this is one of many reasons I struggle to sleep well.

I'm often the same way. I really just don't want to die in my sleep, though. I want to know. I want to be awake when it happens.

I think I'm with you as one of my fears is going to sleep and just never waking up. I know I won't know that happened but awake me still feels I'd want one last look at the world or something. But I also don't like the idea a death where I'm awake and aware of any pain, especially if it's extremely terrible pain. If I'm awake but fall unconscious and slip away peacefully, fair enough!

I mean, I don't love pain. But I'd take a painful death over death in my sleep. I just want to know. Knowledge is control for me, and I have control issues. For some reason, I just feel the need to know. Not knowing is the scariest thing to me.
