OP response

Okay, I'm glad so many people are rushing to reassure me that it's because he's old and fugly and not because of any purity brigade, but... in the past when I've made secrets about this ship, I got a lot of comments about how *gasp* Diana WOULD NEVER, because BAD GUY. So I'm not imagining that, y'all.

I think the HE'S SO UGLY is a little over the top but I still think that the same basic explanation still holds

Namely, sometimes people just aren't into ships

I'm not saying his looks are not a factor. I'm just pointing out that what I said in the secret is also a factor, because I've experienced such comments firsthand, in this very community.

I think my point is. Like. The people who were saying those things are people who don't like the ship. They're not people who totally have the same fantasy that you do but who aren't writing porn about it because feminism has convinced them they shouldn't, unlike back in the good ol' days of fandom.

I don't believe I said that they were? I think that fandom as a whole is less receptive to such pairings and kinks at the moment, or at least there's a more vocal minority against them.

I'm surprised by the resounding chorus of "he's so old and ugly". Maybe that's what has changed because young women with older, unconventionally attractive men used to be rather prevalent.

And from where I'm standing, Danny Huston could totally get it.

I was surprised myself. He's not Chris Evans but he's got a lot of personal magnetism, IMO. I admit that young women paired with older, (perhaps) unconventionally attractive men is a kink of mine, though.

Same, and has been since at least Lecter/Clarice and Phantom/Christine.

Both of which had huge followings.

I ship Erik/Christine and have shipped other similar stuff, and I can see why people ship Hannibal/Clarice, but I can’t see the ship in this secret, because I can’t see a romantic relationship happening between them, and I’m never interested in PWP except for characters I already ship romantically.

I know I’m not speaking for every other hero/villain shipper out there, but there’s a good chunk of Phantom/Christine and Clarice/Hannibal shippers who are into fic where villain/heroine couples have as close to a healthy romantic relationship as is possible with such fucked up backstories.

OTOH, I think part of why this particular version of heroine/villain doesn't do it for so many people when the trope is otherwise popular is that....he never seems like that much of a threat to Diana? Like, he's doing terrible things but he's ultimately a cog and a pawn. Whatever charisma the actor has only goes so far. If the menace isn't there on the interpersonal level, the kink is a lot less hot for a lot of people.

Thank god it isn't anymore. Women really need to develop some fucking standards and have less daddy issues.

What is your problem

Re: OP response

(Anonymous) 2019-10-20 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m one of the people in this thread that ships plenty of male villains with non-villainous women, and I still doubt Diana would be into this guy, because yeah, he’s a villain, and her character in the movie would be more likely to turn him into a bloody smear on the floor than let him fuck her.

I think you’re conflating a bunch of different reasons why people don’t like the idea of him fucking Diana, from in-story reasons like his villainy making it unlikely, to fandom preferences (people think he’s ugly and find the idea a turn off, they ship Diana with someone else, they dislike hero/villain ships in general, etc.) Not everybody’s gonna like or dislike a pairing for the same reasons, and that’s fine.

I ship fucked up stuff all the time, but man I get sick of people complaining about the purity police, because so much of it boils down to “why don’t more people appreciate my kinks?” It’s not like there was a Diana dubcon archive that got shut down by antis, people just aren’t into this guy for whatever (totally valid, even if they’re just not into villains in general) reasons.

da.

yeah this is where all the whining about 'purity police' really makes me roll me eyes. people still like fucked-up things, but not everyone who likes fucked-up things gravitates towards the same ones, and there are plenty of other fucked-up dynamics that fandom doesn't pick up either.

it's not people specifically targeting this ship for being BAD, it's just that no one wants to play in the sandbox, and they don't have to want to.

It reminds me of fandoms I've been in where people have defended unpopular characters by claiming that their haters are just racist/sexist/homophobic, while the people who hated those characters were sitting there with lists of Bad Things These Characters Have Done with full APA style citations.
Like sure, it's likely there are people out there who dislike the thing you like for the reason you say, but it's *not* likely to be all of them. Just... accept that you like something that not everyone likes, and move on!
