My sister's fiance thought The Thing was only "Okay". :(

I think horror is an even more heavily subjective genre than most.

I thought The Thing was good, but not great. I might up that to "very good" if I adjust for the fact that it's far from new.

Plus, fakey effects (whether practical or cgi) bother some people more than others. I thought The Thing's practicaly effects were really solid given when the movie was made, but they still looked kinda fake, which made the entire thing about 70% less scary than it would've been if the effects were entirely convincing.
