Manga or anime? I mean, both endings kinda sucked, but in different ways, so I'm curious.

As someone that loves the characters and art style and rewatches from time to time? You're not wrong. For me, the anime definitely had that "we're way ahead of the manga, we have to wrap this up, and we failed the dismount" feel.

I read this as meaning the ED and not the actual story ending. And yeah, the ending of the anime could have been better.
