Lover

There are only a very few instances that I wouldn't cringe at its use.

I also very much dislike 'stuffie' or 'stuffy' for a stuffed animal.

Unfortunately, the English language doesn't have any good gender-neutral words for boyfriend/girlfriend. Partner can be confusing (romantic or business partner?) and some people don't like when straight couples use it, significant other is too weildy, and others like sweetheart are too cheesy.

I don't mind lover, but there is something kind of archaic about it, and there is the whiff of a suggestion of either an extramarital affair or a FWB relationship, even when you know it's just a conventional romantic relationship.
