Do we know if Derek has any Hispanic influences in his life? I live in a bilingual state (Eng/Spanish), and I've heard several of the Spanish-speaking aides or teachers at school call female students 'Mama'. It took me aback the first time I heard a 40-something woman calling a 10-year-old 'Mama'. It wasn't like all girls all the time, but it certainly wasn't uncommon. It seems to be (I didn't ask anyone) a generalized term of endearment for women/girls in the Hispanic culture. It seems that Derek was raised in a somewhat rough neighborhoods, and there is often a mix of cultures in such areas. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he picked up that habit as a child.

Anyway, that's what I hear when Derek says 'Mama'. Don't know if it's just the association it has for me, or the inflection he uses, but I hear 'female endearment' rather than 'mother of children', so it's never bothered me.

Same.

I don't recall that this is an explicit part of Morgan's backstory, no. I'm also fairly certain that he doesn't address any other female characters like this, only Garcia.

not in the fandom or watching the show, but could he be doing it because GARCIA is Hispanic? I knew lots of people in college who referred to their Native friends as "cousin" (especially when joking around) even though they themselves weren't Native or grew up on the rez

Oh, cool! I like that idea. Thanks. (Commenter who suggested Hispanic culture link.)
