I don't think he ever cared about Jesse beyond being a useful idiot that idolizes him.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-23 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how anyone could think this. Even Hank who hated Walter at the end realized he cared about Jesse just based on what Jesse was telling him.

Sure, just like Trump cares about the sycophants who Yes Man him. Jesse was like a pet.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
WTF does Trump have to do with this? Looks like someone is living rent free in your brain lol.

they're both driven entirely by ego

it makes sense to me

(Anonymous) 2019-10-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's an analogy

Methinks the character is a bit more complex than you give him credit for. "Like a pet" would be like I would describe Jesse's relationship with Todd.

I'd say the narrative disagrees with you. Walter literally sacrifices himself to save Jesse's life. I'm not sure how else you could express that Character A cares about Character B.

Idk, anon, I thought BCS gave me a much better understanding and deeper insight into Saul's character. It makes me love him more (and Saul was my favorite in BrBa too).

Walt loved Jesse. He used him, and was an asshole the whole time, but he clearly loved him in a messed up father/son kind of way.

I think it's pretty clear he cares about Jesse ferrin fairly early in the series. It's just that Walt also treats him like a tool. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive unless you have really idealistic definitions of what love is.

Jesse's his favorite tool. Like a really good cast iron pan.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-24 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
The sentiment holds. You don't know love until you've had a good cast iron pan.

I think Walt fits the profile of an abuser to a T, honestly. Both his relationships to Jesse and Skyler attest that
But you see, the abuser *needs* his victims. He needs Jesse to affirmate his power. He's definitely capable of attachment but it's a very selfish one.

Please please please give BCS a shot! It's not Breaking Bad but I promise you it's just a slow start by comparison. You don't care for Jimmy McGill as a focal point but once "Saul Goodman" starts creeping into stardom it's a different story. And oh I don't want to spoil it but it has so amazing background in season 3-4 for the events in BrBa.

It was clearly toxic, but yeah, he cared about Jesse in his own way. I mean, he was drugged and in pain and called Junior by Jesse, so yeah it's some messed up father/son dynamic. Walt was literally awful to everyone in the show, using them all to his own means, so Jesse was no different.
