Did they keep your name or made it look as if somebody else had written it? If they did credit properly I'd probably be flattered too. Maybe a bit miffed if it was a pay site or something like that.

Not the anon but it happened to me as I found out when a tumblr post was going around warning people
1) yes it has your name but you're not getting any comments/kudos/feedback because you don't know it's there since
2) they didn't ask permission and provide you with a linkback the way ppl do on AO3 usually, they just wholesale copied the fics over
3) they do this to get clicks to their site to get eyes on their ads, unlike sites like AO3, so not a pay site but close since they are profiting from your work
4) it's not flattery, I don't know how their system works, out of the hundreds of fics I have in various fandoms they chose 3 from smaller fandoms with nothing stand out about them in terms of tropes/hits/etc so it seems random to me, it's not "I love this fic so I translated it" it's "lets post fic which gets us site views"

I lowkey daydream about someone asking to translate one of my fics because I'm also a nobody, so I'd be flattered too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I would definitely feel flattered too. Like if someone liked your work so much to translate and copy it to another language/site, then you must be doing something right.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-04 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just a form of theft, they're only doing it to get clicks to their site for the advertisers. Not flattery.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I would feel flattered, but if they didn't at least keep my name and any other author's notes on it, then I would be pissed off as well. You can feel both at the same time: "Yay, my stuff is worth stealing! But fuck you for stealing it, asshole."

You reminded me of something I saw on local TV many years ago:

There's an area in a nearby town that's mostly summer homes that remain empty most of the year. One night an organized band of robbers hit most of the houses and our local TV sent a reporter to interview the affected homeowners and neighbors. I remember quite clearly a woman who was very offended that they didn't rob her house. "What? It wasn't good enough?"

This feels like something you'd see on a sitcom, and I love it.

Birds gonna fly, fish gonna swim, Russians gonna completely ignore even the vaguest idea of copyright. I shit you not, in a Russian bookstore I once saw Inuyasha with his ears photoshopped off on the cover of a romance novel.

There's a super popular Russian site where people tell stories (usually from their daily life), and the best stories always end up stolen and posted on a smaller site. The authors mostly consider it something of an honor.

There was a huge scandal in Russian Sector of Internets, most of the Russian fans/fandom ppl were very angry about this theft site and wrote a lot of angry letters to the hoster, so the site had to move to some other hosting... as well as remove all stolen texts (but keeping their titles and summaries and links to the original as bookmark servise or smth like that). Russian ficwritersand fanartists are opposed of fandom stuff theft it'sonly a ccreator of that site is a thief : ( do not judje everyone else on him plz, it is totally unfair (there are a lot of english speaking ppl posting stolen fanart from pixiv for example...)

ehh, not really. In fandom circles people get butthurt about fic plagiarism. There is some Russian fic translations made without permission - the translator's note would say that they had asked the author and are waiting for reply, idk if they've really asked.

The books, well, that's another story. A lot of people buy the books they pirated and liked to support the author.

The book covers are the funniest. I've seen more than a dozen books that have a photoshoped Dean Winchester.

About Inuyasha - I suppose that was a detective novel "F.M." by Boris Akunin, iirc the villain calls himself Inuyasha, titular anime character is referenced, small illustration of anime Inuyasha (same as on the cover, but not edited) is included. Dunno about him asking for permission though.

lol I feel the same way. Maybe I'm just too apathetic but I've had my stuff get copied a couple times without any credit. I'm just like "wow someone liked it enough that they wanted to claim it as their own"

I'm like... too depressed to even care.

I was asked if some of mine could be translated to Russian and it is flattering. The more the merrier.
