Hmm... is there somewhere specific in fandom where this has happened? Or do you find it frequently happens?

Not OP but I have seen plenty of gatekeeping in fandom. For example there's the old "you are not a true fan if you didn't read/watch the book/comics/expanded universe/original show/spinoff series/etc."

Oh, okay. I was thinking of another kind of gatekeeping. Yes, I've definitely run into one or two folks who want to challenge others' authenticity as fans.

Not OP but the gatekeeping I see now is "you are shipping the wrong thing so you're evil and should be forced out of the fandom"

(Anonymous) 2019-10-25 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
... is there a fandom where gatekeeping isn't a thing?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just where I'd hung out, but in 20 or so years in various video game fandoms, I've only seen maybe 2 people get pissy about those who called themselves Final Fantasy fans or RPG fans if they dared like anything BUT the original Final Fantasy for NES (or whatever their standard of JRPG was). Fortunately, I had a smartass friend shut them down with a "you're not an authentic RPG fan if you've never played tabletop/pen and paper!"

I don’t know about JRPGs, but the quintessential WRPG gatekeepers are No Mutants Allowed: https://kotaku.com/the-relentless-champions-of-classic-fallout-1715984448

Yeah, I'm in the MCU fandom and I've seen literally zero "You're not a real fan if you don't read the comics" type stuff, which is a relief, because I'm just not into comics and was a bit worried that would be a problem. However, the MCU fandom is so big and so fragmented that it wouldn't surprise me if some corners of it are more gatekeepery than others. *shrugs*

There’s this terrible “bring back gatekeeping” post that’s been making the rounds recently: https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/blog/celticpyro/186765318767

Speaking of gatekeeping: I’m not the OP of this post, but I am the monster-loving anon who stopped writing for a shared monster universe because the head mod made a 14 words joke. That mod is good friends with the “bring back gatekeeping” person. If there’s anyone I want to keep out of my fandoms, it’s Nazis.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-26 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! So they were Nazis after all?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-26 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.
