I kind of agree with the OP here. I'm not saying that the stories that have been written so far suck; not at all, just that I haven't found one yet that's really sharp and well-written, the kind of of story that sticks with you and instantly becomes a fandom classic. I'd love to see some stories like that.

This is pretty much what I was trying to say, in a much more eloquent fashion than I was able to put across. I'm not by any means saying that the current writers for the Merlin fandom are horrible and are the worst fic writers on the planet, I've just noticed a lack of incredibly well-written, memorable fic - the stuff out there is okay, but not fantastic. It's not making me rave about how amazing it is. So far, nothing out there is something I would rec as being brilliant and worth reading for all Merlin fans. It's simply at the level (and in a few cases, under the level) and not leaping above it.

Sorry to butt in, I'm actually glad you came over here and defended your point. It makes a little more sense now, but I could see how the current writers of such a new fandom would get upset. I personally think it's premature to want fantastic, awesome and unbelievably WOW kind of fics from a series that's only five episodes in. This is why I haven't written anything yet because I don't think I've seen enough of the characters and story to really go on. I may be wrong, but that's my problem with writing for it. As for the other authors, I think what they've put out is entertaining and alright, and it's helping the fandom jumpstart and pick up good speed. I think it's pretty small so far, so it's good that people are writing for it and getting involved.

I'm not meaning to argue with you on it, but I was glad to see why you'd say that. It makes me want to read more just to support the writers so they can do more and maybe someday impress all of us with some stuff you can reccommend down the road. I just think it's too early to start discouraging what we have so far.

Thank you for that. I totally understand what you mean. You make a good point - the show is only five episodes in. I do have hope for what's to come with this fandom - just right now the ratio of awesome fics to only so-so fics is lacking, I think. It is just sort of my immediate reaction to say "Well, we have quantity, but not so much quality yet." Hopefully this will change in the forthcoming times.

paperclipbitch has written some Merlin fic and even though I'm not in the fandom, she is one of the writers I would have faith in, no matter what she chooses to write. I'd definitely recommended checking hers out.

I thought you said it pretty clearly! But maybe I understood you well because I feel the exact same way. I was re-reading some of my favorite Remus/Sirius fics from the earlier days of HP fandom and I was just blown away all over again by them. Maybe the other commenter here is right and the writers will fall into the groove of things when we get to know the characters better. I hope so, because I already love the characters and the show; now I want to read some truly awesome fic about them!

Yes, yes, and more yes. I wasn't trying to be mean and hateful toward the Merlin fandom, which is why I tried to word it that way instead of something like "MERLIN FANDOM SUCKS SO FAR", which I don't think is the case. There just hasn't been, like you said, anything that's blown me away just yet. I have my fingers crossed that something will come along as the show proceeds through its run!
