As a California actor who has worked in both anime and general ADR, I can assure you that they do use beeps here for both. :) And as for the length of the line and how it's recorded, generally it depends on the actors' comfort level, or level of expertise.

I have heard that in Spanish dubs, recorded at one of the studios I've worked at, they actually don't use any beeps there, and they just let the actors play out the entire scene.

I do appreciate you pointing out the whole "real actors" thing. I was gonna do so myself but I figured it was too late. xD

Ooh, okay. I don't know where I got it in my head that California studios don't do that--I feel like I heard it at a panel or something, but I can't remember what panel or what actor said it. Thanks for letting me know!
