Not the OP, but...

RE: finding het and/or gen fans in almost any fandom. Yes, they exist, but the bigger the fandom is, often the harder it is to find and connect up. And when it comes to general fandom discussions, the weirder you look. Hell, at cons I'm looked down on for not wanting yaoi doujin for the fandom I'm most active in. I got a bizarre look from a doujin shopkeeper in Japan when I asked for a "ren-ai" doujinshi for that same fandom (pure romance, love; a term often used for het relationships in manga and drama). And I get people asking me all the time why I don't go to YaoiCon.

It's assumed that if you're into anime/manga fandom and have a pair of tits, you must like men fucking each other. I'm just not into it, so that (according to the bulk of certain fandoms) means there's something WRONG with me!

I don't know what fandoms you're in, but the ones I'm in usually don't buck general discussions with no shipping involved. And most fandoms tend to have a bigger het fanbase than a slash one unless the show has a very prominent male cast with girls in very small roles like Prince of Tennis or Hitman Reborn (although I think Tenipuri has a het subcommunity, Reborn definitely does and het writers as well).

I honestly don't buy it that's hard find het fans in a fandom unless you don't advertise yourself. I noticed a small trend that people ASSUME that het isn't welcome in a slash dominated fandom. For example, there was a Hetalia secret not too long ago and the poster made it seems that het was unwelcome in the fandom for some odd reason and I was floored because a good number of fans ship Austria/Hungry, which is a canon het pairing. It's that het fans tend not to be as active as slash ones in that type of fandom.

Actually, I believe the bigger than fandom, the easier to find them because it would lend to a sub-community with like-minded people or a little niche in the fandom.

Maybe, you used a term he wasn't too familiar with and usually the women patrons he gets were fujoshi. About that Yaoi-Con thing, none of my friends who aren't into BL never get asked that. Hell, I don't get asked that if a person doesn't knows I'm a fujoshi.

I HIGHLY doubt that stereotype is actually true. And no, I think you're putting on the dramatics quite honestly.

To be honest, yes, the majority of my current fandoms seem to be ones with more of a male cast population. Even ones with strong and/or equal numbers of females sometimes dominate in the slash department, though (a lot of video game RPGs come to mind for this, actually). So it's not that I'm baffled by the presence of slash, more like it's like trying to dance through raindrops. And it's hard, and when people ask "Why the heck are you walking that way?" I have to explain that I'm just not into yaoi/BL/etc. and more often than not, I get people that go "Srsly? You don't see the chemistry? The hottness of the buttsex?" and that just... makes me a bit uncomfortable.

I've certainly learned to advertise myself for those fandoms that I *write* in, but fandoms that I just like to skim through is a bit harder, often because I don't know people and finding like-minded fans (that first step) is also the hardest-- how do you do it when the usual methods (e.g. searching, looking at C2s, whatever) isn't working?

As for the Yaoi-Con thing, I probably should have prefixed that with a "I'm from San Francisco and into anime, so it's a stereotype for local women (I think)."

Didn't mean to be dramatic, but I do know where the OP's coming from.
