You're missing the point. The point is not historical or mythological accuracy. The point is the pretty boys and the slash-y-ness ('the heart cannot truly hate that which makes it whole').
The writing gets better... and I don't think they're intending to stick to the legends. They're just doing whatever. And I think it works, just about.
Except Gaius. He annoys me.
