I get what the photo is trying to do but it still looks like they almost forgot to put him in there and shoved him at the bottom as in "phew almost forgot, that was close!"

Personally I feel the exact opposite. Having the writer/creator get all dressed up in whatever dramatic look the actors or in would seem hilarious and cringey to me. Whereas just having the creator there, prominent in the short but also separate from the cast, feels really appropriate. Especially for things like BtVS, where the creator is such a prominent force behind the show.

There are definitely shows where the creator feels barely relevant, and putting them in the shot is like, "lol, okay." But BtVS is very much not one of those shows, and Joss is very much not one of those creators.

Other than the blue shirt, which was likely deliberate to the composition of the photo to make him stand out, he's dressed very much like Angel, Spike, and Xander.
