Lovecraft-inspired

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-10-30 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking for recs for your favorite movies (or tv episodes of horror anthologies would work too) inspired by Lovecraft. I feel like I've seen all the actual Lovecraft adaptions (though maybe I've missed some). But are there ones that aren't straight adaptions, but are inspired by him and are good that you would recommend?

It's a bit dated, but I enjoyed the movie Cast a Deadly Spell.

This is a bit of a convoluted sideways rec, but there is this reviewer in youtube, Deusdaecon, who has an annual "Lovecraft Month" where he reviews movies that are either outright based on Lovecraft or have some similarities with it. So if you google "deusdaecon lovecraft month" you should get a list of Lovecraftian movies.

Fair warning: not all of the movies are good, some are enjoyably bad, some not even that. The reviews include a full summary/retelling with spoilers, so I recommend not actually watching them before you see the movie.

Have you seen The Endless?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3986820/

I'd recommend watching it without watching any of the trailers first.

Looking for a nice A:TLA fanfiction.
I don't care about ships, but worldbuilding is nice.
Anything during the 100 year war is cool if it has series characters.

Looking for comics that don't involve superheroes. I read a fair bit of manga already and want to branch out some.

How was your day?

I fucked up my knee. :(

Okay. Got out of an obligation I wasn't too hot about. Not that I hate to do it, but my body wasn't interested in cooperating this week. It's probably for the best though, and it can be rescheduled, hopefully during a time I don't have stupid random pains.

I also still have a home and a job and my general health, so there's that. Still figuring out life and happiness. And hopefully getting a situation where I actually get to sleep at night without being constantly woken up by a shitty bed. I need that above everything else right now.

Do you exercise your brain?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-31 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
If so, how?

I noticed that sinse I stopped studying Maths and Economics a year ago I have been having fewer fic and fanideo ideas and motivation. So I've recently started studying a foreign language in hopes of restoring my creativity.

Re: Do you exercise your brain?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-31 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I try doing one crossword puzzle a day (my friend always gives me shitty Dollar Store books for holidays, and that's exactly my idea of fun, so I'm not lacking).

I never excelled at math in school, and now that I'm 30, I'm going back to kind of figure out why. I think the way it was taught when I was growing up was confusing - could be because my friends are mostly artsy, but I know a lot of adults who consider themselves bad at math. So I've been doing low-level math workbooks, especially fractions right now. 💯

Chess, trivia, crosswords. That kinda stuff I guess. IDK I mostly do it because I enjoy it but I guess it counts as exercizing my brain.

Re: Do you exercise your brain?

(Anonymous) 2019-10-31 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, exercise seems to do more for my brain than most brain game stuff.

If you've been sitting for a long time, please stand up and stretch. Maybe a couple jumping jacks. They don't have to be good ones. Just please, for me. Or since you have no reason to care what I want, uh, for whoever you would do it for.

Argh I’ve been carving pumpkins for an hour; I do need to stretch, thanks.
