I've taught this, too. For me, though, I interpret it as Nick, our incredibly unreliable narrator, has a crush on Gatsby that is unrequited. I always kind of have to lead the class into interpreting Myrtle's party where Nick goes off with the neighbor. I think that's a quick gay tryst for Nick that is glossed over by the unreliable narration and hints at Nick's thing for Gatsby.
