The culinary snob in me wants to suggest they should be teaching knife skills rather than using a mandoline, period.

A mandolin is much more efficient and accurate than a knife.

Perhaps for making paper thin slices or specialty cuts like a waffle cut. For just regular slicing... no. It's only "more efficient and accurate" than a knife if your knife skills are poor.

I always get flinchy when I see anyone put something into a deep fryer with their bare hands and no tongs or dipper or anything like that.

Oh, gods below, this... Saw a video of someone making Japanese style chicken cutlets the other day and they seemed put their fingers into the oil when starting the fry and I was horrified.... (I assume they actually didn't, but it sure as hell looked like they did...)

My mum always uses the mandolin without the handguard, and always ends up adding a little blood to whatever she's cooking :c

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
well thats how you inherit her powers, see

(SA maybe cut-resistant gloves might work better, like another comment suggested? But they can feel clumsy, too)

(Anonymous) 2019-11-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just watching Claire on the Bon Appetit Youtube re-creating Ruffles potato chips and was using a mandoline without a guard and I sat there watching from between my fingers thinking "AAAHHHHHH!"

She was okay, though.

I prefer using a cut-resistant glove because the hand gaurds are clunky and annoying.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Same!

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I'm always curious if those black gloves they wear when using one are cut resistant or there because they cut themselves.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
My friend got one of these when she got married. She’s never used it, but her husband has and he always ends up cutting himself.
