I've never had a low battery on mine, but it's apparently ridiculously sensitive, and the actual alarm will go off randomly for seemingly no reason. It's the loudest, most shrill one I've heard (well, I really only have experience with the ones at my parents' house so I guess that's not saying much) but it's much worse than my parents' and it's almost always late at night when it goes off. So annoying.

Do you have a vacuum? Dust that sucker. Dust will actually set off a smoke alarm.
Also - check if it's past its ten-year age limit, and if it is, replace it (you local fire department might do that for you for free/have a program with the Red Cross to do that for free if you're in the US).

It was replaced within the last couple years so it's fairly new, but I've never dusted it so I will give that a shot!
