I feel this, especially when it comes to Winry. I mostly liked her but seriously people, at the end of the day she is in fact the typical sidelined female character in a shounen series. Bending over backwards to show why she's so amazing and not like the other shounen heroines and this why Arakawa is so amazing because clearly no other shounen series has ever had good female characters is just annoying (actually I'd like to also direct this to One Piece fandom and to some extent Boku no Hero Academia as well. You can admit that your series has flaws when it comes to female characters and still enjoy it, it's fine, you are allowed to still like it).

Yeah, I actually think Winry was a better character in the first anime, the one manga and Brotherhood fans love to hate for all kinds of reasons, including "ruining the strong female characters." But in that anime Winry was more developed as a character outside of just her relationship to the Elrics. Maybe she was a little more "whiny" than her manga counterpart, but in shounen, a female character who cries over silly things sometimes but gets to have her own adventures and a character arc that aren't about her relationship with the male protagonist is much more unique than a competent badass female character who's good at her job but doesn't do much besides be an anchor for the male protagonist.
