I seriously don't know how anyone could care about any of the new characters in SW, like they're all just terrible or tropey as shit. The only character who had any potential to be a breath of fresh air was Finn because we've never seen a Stormtrooper's perspective, but for some bizarre reason Disney decided to make the character with the most potentially harrowing story fucking comic relief. Poe has no character beyond quips, Kylo is a character who has done horrible, evil shit for no real or decent reason and is getting redeemed despite not ever showing any signs of guilt or remorse, and Rey is just bland. Fuck the new series, honestly.

100% agreed about Finn. It would have been so interesting to see a parallel between him and Kylo, imo--one raised by Jedi and turned to evil, one raised by the Empire and turned to good. But, no. Finn gets nothing, apparently, but for some reason Palpatine is back because why not.

i do like rey myself, but god do i agree with you. they could have done something cool with the juxtaposition of kylo and finn given their respective histories in the empire 2.0, but instead he got relegated to being the side-character comic-relief bc that's a better use of his character somehow??

honestly it feels like everything they set up for these movies is just completely wasted potential.

I don't agree that's true. Or at least, it isn't any more true than it has ever been for Star Wars. Star Wars characters have always been somewhat archetypes, but they've always risen above that, at least for me. They did in the OT, they did in the Prequels, and they have in the new movies.

How have any of the new characters risen beyond archetypes in the new movies? Do you seriously think Finn, Poe, Hux, or Kylo have any depth or subversion?

In The Force Awakens not so much. Really only Rey managed to rise a bit above the archetype in that one. But in Last Jedi absolutely yes I believe all of them did.

Kylo is a character who has done horrible, evil shit for no real or decent reason and is getting redeemed despite not ever showing any signs of guilt or remorse

Yeah, I have to laugh that his tragic backstory amounted to "waking up in the middle of the night to a scene involving his uncle and a lightsabre that was so ambiguous the audience saw THREE different versions of it, but was apparently reason enough to slaughter all his classmates and commit himself to the space nazis."

But don't worry! According to shippers, the thirty-something mass-murderer will redeem himself by deciding NOT to kill any more innocents because he wants to fuck a teenager!

"My uncle thought I was evil and thought about killing me for 12 whole seconds before he decided not to!"

"OMG, that's so awful! You poor baby, what did you do?"

"I killed most of my classmates and ran away with the rest of them to go be a space nazi!"

"...wow. You sure showed him."

This is probably bait, but when was it ever stated that Rey is a teenager? Or is there another controversial Kylo pairing I was completely unaware of? (Is Hux the teenager?)

Like I have seen people state a lot of reasons to dislike Reylo (many of which I agree with tbh), but I have literally never seen anyone try to claim it has an inappropriate age gap until right this moment.

She's nineteen in TFA according to the novelization, which was based on the script. Which granted, would make her twenty by TROS.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
I googled out of curiosity. Apparently Rey is 19, Finn is 23, Poe is 32 and Kylo is 29 at the start of TFA.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but we've moved on about a year between the start of TFA and the end of TLJ, right? Ignoring Reylo for a second, this does confirm my theory that Poe needs to grow the fuck up already.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
At least chances are good he won't be making any fucking "your mom" jokes in the next movie. Fingers crossed.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
because he wants to fuck a teenager!

I was with you until I got to this part. But wow, this is a facet of your argument you should probably cut if you want people to take you seriously. She's 19, he's 29. So what.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Shipping and stuff aside, you know a 19 year old and a 29 year old hooking up is super creepy, right?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
mte im 30 and feel weird when anyone under 25 hits on me, 19 y/os are not even in the vicinity of my radar. i have plenty of *friends* of all ages but i certainly would not want to date them.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-04 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr and the 'anything more than a one month age gap is pedo!" is over that way.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-05 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... there were different versions of it because the truth wasn't tol first. And no, Kylo did not slaughter the students, they attacked him (for defending himself against Luke).
