I dunno. In my experience, it was never that they wanted to be miserable or make others miserable too. Everyone I've known who brought loads of negativity and drama into fandom spaces was unaware they were doing so (unless they were trolls or something).

And a lot of it, at least in my experience, wasn't that they were going around, making mean comments on people's fics or something. They were just always sitting on this high horse, constantly whining about what other people were doing and dictating what other people in fandom should do, lecturing people on how media works while clearly not understanding how it works themselves, and almost constantly whining about something. This usually put other fans around them in a bad mood, and if someone pointed out that they were being negative or whatever, you'd get treated to this over-the-top shitfit about negative people across several platforms.

They weren't looking to be miserable. It's just that this is what happens when you don't have any control over your life and aren't dealing with your problems. You just find something you feel like you can control (fiction, for instance) and recreate your problems in a new environment.
