I got into fandom in adulthood so I never had that chance to find fandom friends in school/college, but there's still definitely issues as you age. for one, the parent thing like above anon noted. for me there's also the issue that I just keep getting older and older but all our lasting irl fandom friends seem to always be in the 25-34 pool, even when friends come and go. At some point that sort of energy is going to be hard for a 40something like me to keep up with.

but my other issue is that I don't game and I don't like a lot of the popular media properties so I can only really bond with other cosplayers, and that's getting harder and harder as the instagram generation pushes out old people in favor of 20, hot, and boobs. I will say though that my lasting irl fandom friends are people that cosplay and staff conventions because they're the most stable as nerds go. they understand responsibility and being an adult rather than trying to hang on to their college attitude past age 30. for real people who are over 30 but try to live their lives like they're still 19 is harder to deal with than not having fandoms in common.
