Is it really them being cynical and stirring up controversy, I figured it was just their fans.

They definitely lean into it - Disney definitely takes advantage of the idea that their movies are triumphs of representation in various ways, for instance

Look at how the news articles frame the debate and how they amplify no names. Most of it is manufactured and then they use fans to sustain it.

That is totally understandable. I feel conflicted about them because I'm still interested in their products, but their marketing is vomit inducing.
