Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Which one do you celebrate if you celebrate at all? I personally like the idea of Friendsgiving, but all of my friends go to their families for the holidays. I wish I was brave enough to issue an open invite to anyone who wants to share a meal but I'm afraid of getting murdered, so...

Thanksgiving has always been big for our family. When I was growing up in the Philippines, we did it every year as a family as a reminder of home. Sometimes we got together with other families, sometimes it was just us. We still come together every year. My sister and brother in law come down so the whole family is here. It has just always been a big deal for us.

When I was in college and my parents were still in the Philippines, a couple of times I went to nice restaurants and did one of those Thanksgiving meal deal things they have (at least, they had them in Boston). But other than that, Thanksgiving has always been a family holiday for me.

We don't watch sports at all (unless the Red Socks are playing). So other than eating, we just spend time with each other. And now watching pets play. It is nice just to relax and spend time together as a family.

I do not like Thanksgiving very much at all and Friendsgiving sounds wonderful but all my friends live on the opposite coast. ;;

I don't. TBH I need just one damn day out of the year where I can escape obligations and be alone with myself, and lately it's been that Thursday when everyone else is too busy with family or giant parties. I thoroughly give thanks for being alone. Treat myself to a steak and chocolate and booze, snuggle the cats, marathon an anime series so I don't have to see christmas shopping commercials...

Turkey Day. I like (some) of the food, and hanging with my family, but the whole 'pilgrims yay!' aspect is a huge turnoff, so i pretty much ignore that stuff.

My bio "family" sucks, so I'd prefer a Friendsgiving, but I'm so fucked up in the head that I'm convinced no one would invite me to their dinner or accept an invite to my dinner unless they pitied me or saw me as some charity case. I've considered doing the "feed the homeless" thing once or twice, but maybe my intentions aren't pure there either, so idk. Probably will end up watching a movie by myself or something.

Your intentions don't need to be pure to volunteer somewhere.

Well, one of the worst members of my bio family is one of those people who enjoys being seen doing charity work in public while treating their "loved" ones like shit in secret. So I wonder, if shitty people can do charity work, then what meaning is there in me doing any? Intellectually, I know it doesn't matter who does it, because if good is being done, then that's all that matters. But things like that bother me.

I go to see my folks for Thanksgiving. I'd love to do Friendsgiving, but even though I have a lot of single friends, all my local friends have family even closer geographically than mine, so they go home, too, and we're all usually too busy to do a separate Friendsgiving before or after.
