I'd argue that RTD is probably underrated as a showrunner, in the sense that criticisms of him mostly have to do with his writing. The problems aren't really with the production, where I think he did a titanic, extraordinary job.

That I'd disagree with. I'd say he did a great job in terms of restarting the show. But I think he had flaws as a showrunner, not just as a writer. I just preferred Moffat's style more and think he did a better job. And I'm also really enjoying Chibnell's style too.

RTD was a racist shithead who got away with it by being subtle (see: Martha suddenly ditching her white fiancee to get together with a black man).
