I call characters trash as a "fuck the haters" thing. Like I don't care if you think I shouldn't like them, they're trash and I love them BECAUSE of it.

But that's only characters that I think really are terrible people. Calling a character who's just a little problematic "trash" as an apology for liking them is annoying, I agree.

+1

It's not a concession. It's a middle finger. And I got another one for OP.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with calling a character you like "trash" in an affectionate way. If you don't like that, frankly, get the fuck over it. And all of these assumptions about how the only reason people would do it is as appeasement for the "fandom police" - I mean, give me a fucking break.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-07 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it too. Especially when they combine 'trash' with something else ie 'trash baby' or whatever else they can think of.

I refer to some characters as trash or garbage because they are in fact a trash or garbage person. It's not a omg purity police thing, they're terrible people and calling them trash/garbage is apt and an easy way to get across what I mean.

Also it's just a silly term that isn't even remotely serious.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
This.

If they're a villain who wants to destroy the world or rule it because like. Mommy issues, or fantasy bullshit or something? They're a garbage person.

I still like them.

Yup, exactly. I like villains. Evil villains who embrace being evil and love what they do. Those characters are absolutely trash. Trash is probably the nicest term to describe them. Still love them.

Exactly. I have zero shame about liking them but I also acknowledge that they are kind of horrible people.

More than characters, it annoys me that we are expected to call OURSELVES "trash" for liking something. Like, why do I have to be a garbage person to find this show/character compelling and interesting?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Who's out here making you call yourself trash

I enjoy that pic choice, OP (or secret maker, whichever applies).

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen anyone refer to trash characters in that way before...

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the Trash Endearment Trend is a lot older than the latest round of purity police nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a big fan of the biggest, most unapologetic dickbag in my preferred fandom (RDR2 -- no prizes for guessing who) ... calling him trash isn't a pre-emptive apology.

He's just trash. I love him, he's well-written, but his actions and personality make him trash.

lmao at this entire thread continuing to do the annoying thing and trying to justify it as something else

the reason doesn't matter, guys, it's annoying regardless

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
it's annoying to you but that doesn't matter much to me

You know what else is annoying? People being titty babies over what strangers on the internet call fictional characters.

Yet here you are...

Sometimes feels like fans of villains can't win. I personally don't really like the trash thing myself but its acknowledging they're not nice characters... but then we also get accused of not doing that and woobiefying villains.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2019-11-08 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
some characters are trash, they're meant to be trash, and they're enjoyable trash. its less a concession to wokeness than irritation at people who woobie enjoyable evil imo. there's no need to justify their actions! they're trash and great at it! let them be great
philstar22: (One Ring)

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-11-08 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. I find woobifying frustrating and annoying. Villains are fun. Let villains be evil.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-08 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I've never interpreted the use of "trash" like this. In fact, it's much more common to see a fan refer to themselves as trash. Even when it's used in regards to a character, to me, it rarely comes across as a way of appeasing fandom police. YMMV, I guess.

Look, man, sometimes the emotion you really really need to get across is "oh my god, this character is the worst and I love them," and I'm not gonna fault fandom for finding colorful ways to say that.

I say this as someone with a ludicrously predictable track record of picking up a new canon and going "THAT ONE. The horrible stabby damaged one who doesn't know how to person. That one is my trainwreck garbage baby and I would die for them." Sometimes it just ain't that deep.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Trash is saved for the characters I dislike.
