I can't stand it when characters don't know how to cook. I hate it when it's a female character that can't cook. It isn't endearing, it isn't cute, and it certainly isn't an admiral character trait when they force inedible food down another characters throat and get offended if they don't pretend to like it.
At best it makes them look like complete idiots, and at worst they look like complete idiots while acting like a complete asshole at the some time.

(The Persona series is particularly bad with this, especially the fourth game.)

Okay but like

"I hate it when it's a female character that can't cook"

But not a male one. So sorry, but uh. That's a very sexist remark.

"I can't stand it when characters don't know how to cook. I hate it when it's a female character that can't cook."

There's a difference between can't stand and hate. But keep sucking OP's proverbial sexist dick, I guess.

OP
I meant that in particular because of that stereotype that women 'must know how to cook' it's played for badly made laughs when they can't.

No, they didn't.

NA

I actually interpreted it differently. I thought they meant that it bothered them more when it was a woman because it played into the whole "helpless woman" narrative, where a woman acts like an idiot thinking it'll impress a guy because some (pathetic, insecure) guys are intimidated by women that are actually competent in any way.

Maybe I'm being overly charitable though, and they actually meant it in a sexist way.

It's not cute, but some people just aren't naturally good at cooking and I don't think it's necessary to perfect the skill as long as you can do the bare minimum of being able to fix something edible.

I do also hate the trope of getting offended when people don't like your cooking though. There's nothing wrong with being one of the bare minimum cooks. If someone didn't like something I made but it was all there was to eat for whatever reason, I wouldn't be offended, I'd just tell them to stop being a baby and suck it up.

As long as someone can feed themself, and doesn't make themself so unhealthy with their diet that they end up needing medical attention (and thus worrying/burdening others), I honestly don't care one way or the other how much or little skill ability they have in the kitchen.

And frankly, I find characters who aren't much good in the kitchen relatable and endearing. If they can't cook eggs or boil pasta or make a salad, then that seems kind of ridiculous and immature to me, but I prefer it when characters don't know much beyond the basics.

HOWEVER. I do hate the trope of characters making other people eat their food and expecting to be complimented, and getting horribly offended when someone doesn't compliment their cooking. If the character is a bad cook but they have no awareness that they're a bad cook, that's annoying.
